When Nona finished speaking, Zane felt about two inches tall. He had known his actions had caused her pain but he hadn't realized just how bad it truly had been. Those days following hadn't been the best for him either, but for a completely different reason. The guilt had been overwhelming and the realization that he would have to face her and Keiran again had caused him to withdraw and try to regroup. And all that had happened was it had made things worse.
He had known, or at least a little part of him had suspected, that Nona liked him. When he had been a teenager, Keiran had teased him about Little Nonnie's infatuation. Back then things had been different though. He hadn't liked her back. And now here he was trying to tell her that and she wasn't listening. No, she was walking away.
Zane wasn't ready for it to end this way. Didn't really want to go back to what they were now that they had finally reached the same page. But while he had been trying to catch up to her, Nona had been flipping the pages backwards. He had to get her back to the place where she was interested in him as more than a friend and apparently talking wasn't going to do it. Zane was never that great with words unless it was explaining the significance of Hannibal's march over the Alps or some other great historical event.
The distance between them was crossed in less than three strides as he reached her and placed a hand on her waist to stop her from going any further away. With a quick motion, Zane turned her around and pulled her tightly against him, dropping his lips to capture her. There had been enough talking and she hadn't heard a single word. It was time to simply show her what he was trying to say.
Her skin was still warm from her anger but it wasn't scalding as he pressed his lips to hers. His right hand came up to cup her cheek gently, fingers pressing against her jaw to get her to open further to him. Zane's left hand gripped her waist, his fingers finding the bare skin left exposed by the incredible dress and pulling her closer to him. This was what he has been fighting against? For the life of him, Zane couldn't figure out why. All those reasons as to why he should back off and not approach her again had disappeared.
There was some noise down the alley as a couple of voices headed their way but he ignored them and they faded again. He kept kissing her, hoping that there would be some way to show her just how sorry and how wrong he had been. If this didn't work, he would have to figure something else out. She deserved better than he had done and he'd find some way to make it up to her, somehow.
