Sanglignée Academy was founded in 1998 by a Tainted man called Hugo Perdue. The number of Tainted that were passing through and even settling in the little village was rapidly growing and Sanglignée was always at maximum capacity. Perdue was a local of the village, and an aspiring entrepreneur. He saw the opportunity and seized it.
About a mile outside of the village itself was a huge, dilapidated manor house. It had seen various uses over the years – a school, a hospital, a convent – and the rebuilding of it was no small feat. With its reconstruction they built another structure; a huge residential building, easily twice as large as the original.

The Buildings
The main Academy building stands four floors high. Most of the rooms have high ceilings, old wooden floors and are decorated with wood panels or embossed paper on the walls. The Residential Halls are vastly different; five floors of slightly dated noughties’ decor, laminated or carpeted floors and painted walls. The goal for the Halls was never to keep up with fashion but to be comfortable and efficient in housing as many people as needed. The entrance areas were intended to reflect the interior of the main building, but it never quite managed to pull it off.
More information of both buildings can be found on their respective boards.
Everyone in SA is Tainted. The institute was created to supply a safe haven to any Tainted that needed it, and as such it rarely even has Untainted visitors. Those that do visit are told what the rest of the outside world is told; that SA is a Further Education Facility for international students. It has always been a common understanding that no one is told that it is a haven for Tainted. The less attention SA receives, the better.
Residential Halls
How you came to be at the Academy is your own choice, but there are guidelines you should stick to. SA does not contact anyone or actively recruit. People know what the place is from word-of-mouth, rumours and hearing it from others that know. Some even find their way accidentally, for it has been said most Tainted feel a pull of their hearts in the direction of Sanglignée.
Not everyone who visits Sanglignée Academy stays there. A lot of people will move on, some will stay in the village and find employment there, or some will head to the city instead. The Academy is a haven, a safe place, a refuge, for anyone that needs it. Permanent residency is not free, but visitors are not charged for their few days of stay.
More information about the Residence Halls can be found on their boards.
Sanglignée Academy is not a school or college. However, not long after its opening people realised the number of young people finding their way there was huge. They were quick to realise that without the right sort of educational progress they were likely to lose their way in the world. The older residence began ‘teaching’ the younger ones, sharing their knowledge and skills, anything they felt important or useful.
These days there are two kinds of education in the facility. Academic study, and ability training.
Monday to Wednesday every week sees various subjects being taught to anyone who signs up. Classes are small to fit the rooms, and the choice of subjects is limited. Current class lists can be found in the lecture rooms board. There are no exams, there are no qualifications, no summer holidays or sick days. People sign up for what they want to, turn up for lectures when they want to, study when they want to. This, surprisingly, means that only people who are serious about learning more in their chosen subjects enrol, and most classes are always full.
Thursdays and Fridays are training days; usually one-on-one coaching between those who have yet to fully harness their ability, and those who have years of practise in it. If the trainer and trainee do not have a counterpart with the exact same ability, they can be matched with someone with something similar. For example, it is commonly believed that elemental kinetics need to develop the same techniques of controlling their abilities, so a Cryokinetic could be paired with a Pyrokinetic.
All teachers of academic subjects are qualified to the highest degree in their chosen subjects. Officially they are registered with the government as teachers in the Academy and are treated and considered as any college or university lecturer would be. They earn a wage and board if they ask for it, and are even called Miss or Sir by the much younger students. Their classes are usually divided by level of capability, often having two groups taking the same subject (one being for the teenagers and high-school level, the other being older college level students).
